Project: Risk Management Education for Small, Part-time and Limited Resource Farmers in Virginia

Objective: To provide comprehensive and regionally appropriate training to improve the risk management skills of agricultural producers. Virginia farmers will also be introduced to various methods of establishing alternative sources of growing traditional crops as well as new enterprises that will help them regain profit to their farming operations. Key objectives are about 200 agricultural producers will receive risk management education and training through workshops and informational meetings; more than 200 row crop farmers in Virginia will learn about production, marketing and financial returns of growing early season tomatoes in high tunnels; about 150 crop farmers and landowners in Virginia will learn about procedures and financial returns of direct marketing of catfish and trout grown in cages in farm ponds; 200 landowners in Virginia will learn about procedures and financial returns for collaborative marketing of meat goats; about 300 row crop farmers will learn about production, marketing and financial returns of certified organic corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton and tobacco.
