Steve is manager
of Blythe Cotton Company in northwest Alabama. Blythe Cotton Company
is a family farm, operating 5200 acres of corn and cotton and pasture
for a 70-head cow-calf herd.
Steve received
a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics in 1987 from the University
of Minnesota. He subsequently held faculty positions at the University
of Florida and Penn State University, primarily working in farm
management extension, but also holding teaching and research appointments.
His graduate and faculty work at various times included analysis
of vegetable, fruit, poultry, cattle, dairy, cotton, and grain production
and marketing. Much of his extension and research activity focused
on risk management. Steve left his tenured position at Penn State
in 1999 to join his wife's father in their farm operation in Alabama.
Steve is active
in farm organiztions and his local community. He serves in an elected
position on the Franklin County, Tennessee school board. He is a
Director of the Southern Cotton Growers Association and also serves
as a Director of the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy
in Washington, D.C. Steve writes monthly columns on economic issues
for Southern Farmer and Farm Futures magazines. He also teaches
economics part-time at the University of the South.
