Nelson is a native of Crockett, Texas where he attended school and was very active in the 4-H Program. He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University. Nelson's program interests are in the areas of sustainable agriculture, agricultural diversification and the survival of small family farms. He has always enjoyed working one-on-one with small scale, beginning and limited resource agricultural producers and has a passion for multicultural education, human resource development and youth leadership development.

Nelson is affiliated with various professional societies and organizations and is active in his local community where he serves as a volunteer for a variety of youth programs.
